Crash Tag Team Racing: gameplay and everything you need to know about

Crash Tag Team Racing is a racing video game that is developed by Radical Entertainment based in Vancouver and is published by Vivendi Universal Games for all the major gaming platforms. Crash Team Racing 2 game was released in 2005 in different months in different countries. This game was re-released for its PlayStation 2 version of the three-disc “Crash Bandicoot Action Pack” compilation which was released in 2007. This game was also getting a Nintendo DS version which was later canceled.

What’s the story of the game?

In the Crash Bandicoot series, Crash Tag Team Racing is the third installment of the series following Crash Nitro Cart. In the game, the story revolves around the protagonist whose name is Crash Bandicoot who has to win the ownership of a dilapidated theme park by finding its missing Power Gems while his nemesis Doctor Neo Cortex does the same in order to defeat him. The reviews from the critics were mixed for this game; the game was praised for its supplementary content, visual style, and humor but its graphics quality, racing mechanics, and tack designs were considered inconsistent and were criticized. This game was then remastered in 2019 which was named Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled.

The player takes the control of the character Crash Bandicoot who has to find the missing Power Gems in each of the five themed areas of the park and also has to retrieve the Black Power Gem of Ebenezer Von Clutch. In the game, the player has to complete in races and earn some Wumpa Coins which is the park’s currency and Power Crystals in order to open the five areas of the park and we have to find out about the identity of the Power Gem thief.

Players can earn extra coins and Power Crystals through platforming which involves engaging with the characters in the park with an icon over their heads to unlock clothing, cars, weapon upgrades or playing minigames. Wumpa coins can also be earned through smashing crates and players can multiply the value of coins earned through drinking Whumpa Whip which remains temporarily. In order to unlock the additional area of the theme park players have to collect power crystals all the time. Some cutscenes can also be unlocked in which crash is shown dying in numerous humorous ways. A costume for the crash is unlocked if unlock all 34 Die-O-Ramas.

What’s the main hook of the game?

The crashing feature found during the racing sections is the main hook of Crash Tag Team Racing. Players can clash with another vehicle by pressing certain buttons on the joystick or whatever the console might be in your case. The player can take control of a powerful turret weapon to shoot at other vehicles by merging with a nearby opponent’s vehicle. Not only can the turret shoot out other vehicles but they can take the incoming attacks too.
